Chief Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court will become the first judge from Manipur to serve on the Supreme Court after the Apex Court Collegium suggested his name. This move will fulfil a crucial representation need for the Northeast region.
Besides, the SC Collegium recommended Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan of Madras High Court for elevation to the Supreme Court.
According to the Collegium’s resolution, “Justice Singh’s impeccable judicial record and administrative competence as Chief Justice make him eminently suitable for elevation.”
Justice Mahadevan, currently serving as Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court, is recognised for his judicial prowess and hails from a backward community in Tamil Nadu, adding diversity to the Bench.
The nominations address vacancies left by the retirements of Justices Aniruddha Bose and AS Bopanna earlier this year.
