Tripura is making substantial strides towards completing the North East Gas Grid (NEGG) project, aimed at enhancing gas supply integration across Northeast Bharat. State officials have confirmed that the project in Tripura is on track for completion by March 2025.
Led by the joint venture entity Indradhanus Gas Grid Ltd (IGGL), which includes stakeholders like GAIL, IOCL, OIL, NRL (Numaligarh Refinery Ltd), and ONGC, the NEGG project involves laying a 253-kilometre gas pipeline across seven districts of Tripura.
State Industries and Commerce Department Director Vishwasree B highlighted the progress, stating that approximately 105 kilometres of the pipeline have already been completed. The remaining sections are in various stages of land acquisition, pipeline welding, and laying, expected to be finalised by the project’s deadline in 2025.
Initially delayed by challenges in land acquisition and ownership document issues, these hurdles have been overcome with resolutions by district magistrates, allowing compensation payments to proceed smoothly.
Once operational, the NEGG is set to ensure a consistent and efficient supply of natural gas, crucial for industrial applications and power generation plants in the region. Beyond infrastructure enhancements, the project holds potential economic benefits, aligning with Tripura’s efforts to leverage its estimated gas reserves of 8 billion cubic metres and grant exploration licenses to ONGC for five blocks.
The completion of the NEGG project is anticipated to strengthen Tripura’s infrastructure landscape significantly, encouraging economic growth and stability through reliable gas supply across the State and adjoining regions.
