Adani Ports managing director Karan Adani has announced that the first phase of the Vizhinjam port project is set to be completed by December this year, with the entire port expected to be fully operational by 2028-29.
The project, in collaboration with the Kerala Government, will see a total investment of Rs 200 billion ($2.39 billion). Adani Ports will contribute Rs 100 billion ($1.2 billion) towards the second phase.
Located at the southern tip of Bharat, Vizhinjam deep-sea port is strategically important due to its proximity to major international shipping routes. It aims to enhance Bharat’scompetitiveness against shipping hubs like Dubai, Singapore, and Sri Lanka.
Originally scheduled to commence operations in 2018, the port experienced delays primarily due to land acquisition issues and local protests. These protests led to coastal erosion and occasional clashes with law enforcement in 2022.
Vizhinjam marks the 13th operational facility for Adani Ports in Bharat and recently received its first large cargo vessel from Maersk.
With environmental clearances and regulatory approvals pending, Adani Ports plans to begin work on subsequent phases as early as October.
During the port’s inauguration ceremony, Karan Adani praised the achievement of welcoming Vizhinjam Port’s first major vessel, calling it a “glorious achievement in Indian maritime history.”
“The mothership now lying in our harbour is a symbol of a new glorious achievement in Indian maritime history,” Adani said at the inauguration. “Privileged to have been given this opportunity to use our expertise to transform this part of Bharat,” he added.
