As the three-tier Panchayat elections approach in Tripura, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its list of candidates. This announcement was made by Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and BJP State General Secretary Amit Rakshit during a press conference on Sunday.
With the Tripura State Election Commission scheduling the elections for August 8, the BJP held a series of meetings over the past three days to finalise its candidates. The Model Code of Conduct is now in effect, prompting all political parties to declare their candidates, file nominations, and commence their campaigns.
Minister Chowdhury stated, “The Tripura State Election Commission has declared August 8 as the election date, leading to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. All political parties are now declaring their candidates, filing nominations, and conducting campaigns. Over the past three days, BJP, the largest political party in Tripura, held multiple meetings to finalise candidates for the Panchayat Elections. Representatives from across the State submitted their nominations, and candidates were then selected.”
Following the selection of candidates, the BJP held consultations with various Tripura Pradesh organisations, district presidents, ministers, MLAs, and other leaders. The list of candidates was then submitted to the selection committee led by BJP State president Rajib Bhattacharya and Tripura Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha.
“Our main criteria for candidate selection include social acceptance, tenure in the party, educational qualifications, and other relevant factors. We are dedicated to working towards village development to contribute to our country,” Minister Chowdhury informed reporters.
He highlighted the democratic and rule-based process followed by the BJP in selecting candidates, asserting that no other party adheres to such meticulous standards.
Minister Chowdhury added, “We have declared candidates for eight Zila Parishads, which comprise 116 seats. In 58 blocks, we have 35 Panchayat Samitis with 423 seats. Additionally, we have fielded candidates for 605 Gram Panchayats, comprising 6,370 seats. We are confident that BJP will win every seat and strengthen the three-tier Panchayat by implementing development works. Nominations will be filed across the state by July 18.”
