Bapi Debnath, known as Neel, has etched his name in history by becoming the third Indian and eighth globally to reach the South Base Camp of Mount Everest in Nepal on a bicycle. The 34-year-old cinematographer and editor from Kolkata embarked on this extraordinary journey, covering a span of 54 days.
Originally from Chandrapur in Agartala and an alumnus of Umakanta Academy School in Tripura, Bapi began his epic journey from Kolkata on May 21, 2024, equipped with a single-gear cycle.
“I embarked on this journey due to my passion and work. Having lived in Kolkata, I wanted to challenge myself,” shared Bapi. His route took him through Kolkata, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Saloni Border, Kathmandu, Gurmi, Namche Bazaar, culminating at the Everest South Base Camp on July 14.
Reflecting on his achievement, Bapi remarked, “On July 14, I reached the South Base Camp and subsequently set a world record. I am the first Bengali cyclist, third Indian, and eighth globally to achieve this feat.”
Describing his bicycle as a simple single-gear model, Bapi dedicated his journey to his father. “I encountered many challenges, including dangerous roads and obstacles, but my determination kept me going. I carried essential supplies like a toolkit, spare tire, and extra spokes,” he explained.
During his journey, Bapi camped out and cooked boiled food to manage digestion issues caused by varying weather conditions. “In Bharat, I stayed at temples and roadside dhabas. In Kathmandu, I found shelter at Ram Mandir, where local people supported me,” he added.
After reaching the Everest South Base Camp, Bapi returned to Tengboche on July 15, completing a journey that exemplifies endurance, determination, and the spirit of adventure.
