The Indian Government has disbursed the initial instalment of USD 2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This payment is part of Bharat’s annual contribution of USD 5 million for the fiscal year 2024-25, as announced by the Representative Office of Bharat in Ramallah.
Since 1950, UNRWA has been providing direct relief and various programs for registered Palestinian refugees. The agency is striving to maintain its operations amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
In a statement on X, the Representative Office of Bharat in Ramallah declared, “The Government of India released the first tranche of USD 2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), as part of its annual contribution of USD 5 million for the year 2024-25.”
Bharat has consistently supported Palestinian refugees and their welfare over the years, contributing approximately USD 35 million by the end of the 2023-24 period. This funding has been used for the agency’s core programs and services, which include education, healthcare, relief, and social services for Palestinian refugees.
During the recent UNRWA Pledging Conference in New York, Bharat announced its commitment to provide medicines to UNRWA upon the agency’s request. Additionally, Bharat reiterated its appeal for the safe, timely, and sustained delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine.
UNRWA’s operations are almost entirely funded by voluntary contributions from UN member States.
