In a pivotal development, the Assam Government has officially handed over a site in Morigaon district to the Tata Group for the establishment of a major semiconductor plant. This marks the culmination of a lease agreement, paving the way for imminent construction to begin.
The land agreement for Tata Group’s semiconductor project in Morigaon district’s Jagiroad, signed at the Sub-Registrar’s office, leases 517.27 bighas of land to Tata Group for a duration of 60 years.
Tata Group Board Member and Chief Human Resources Officer Ranjan Bandopadhyay and AIDC Manager (Tech) and Project in charge Dhiraj Pegu were present to sign the deal.
The occasion was graced by Morigaon District Commissioner Devasish Sharma with Sub-Registrar Namrata Chahu overseeing the proceedings.
Devasish Sharma expressed the significance of the day for Morigaon district and Assam as a whole, noting Tata’s plans to initiate production at the facility by 2026, initially on a small scale.
“Today is a historic day for not just Morigaon district but for Assam and the entire country. The land registration for the semiconductor plant has been completed today. Everything promised by our CM has been realised on the ground. A total of 527.17 bigha of land has been registered under the Tata Group’s name. The Tata Group team was here and completed all formalities. They have indicated that construction work will commence soon,” Sharma stated.
Key representatives from Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd, including Kaninika Thakur, Assistant Vice President, along with executives and project team members, were present at the signing ceremony.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for Tata Group’s semiconductor and testing centre in Jagiroad on March 13, marking a technological milestone for Assam. The centre represents an investment of Rs 27,000 crore and is projected to produce 48 million chips daily, providing direct employment to 16,000 individuals. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma also attended the ceremony.
The semiconductor industry in Bharat is still in its infancy, with both local and multinational companies aiming to harness its immense potential.
Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd will establish a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, capable of producing 48 million chips per day across various sectors including automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.
CM Himanta highlighted that during previous industrial revolutions, Bharat’s Northeast region was often overlooked by industries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative has now included the region in the technological revolution, highlighting the region’s integration into Bharat’s industrial landscape.
Tata Group aims for commercial production of semiconductor chips at the plants in Gujarat and Assam, with production expected to commence in 2026. The disruptions caused by chip shortages during the Covid pandemic pointed towards the need for indigenous manufacturing for national security and encouraging domestic innovation.
