Hundreds of trucks carrying potatoes are stranded at the Assam-Bengal border in Chagolia, Dhubri district, following a directive allegedly issued by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee banning potato exports to Assam.
Since the evening of July 16, the West Bengal Police have enforced a blockade at the Boxirhat Check Station, preventing trucks from entering Assam and leaving drivers uncertain about their fate.
Reportedly, the ban aims to prioritise local potato supply in West Bengal amid rising vegetable prices, leaving truck drivers and exporters from West Bengal concerned about potential spoilage and economic losses.
Exporters asserted that West Bengal has ample potato reserves to meet local demand, highlighting the risk of significant perishable goods losses if the blockade persists.
