In a tragic incident, one passenger lost their life and two others sustained injuries after the derailment of several coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh express train in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda today. The derailment occurred in Pikaura, situated between Gonda and Jhilahi.
Rescue teams have been dispatched to the scene for relief operations. Visuals from the site show passengers standing beside the tracks with their luggage, clearly shaken by the accident. The train, numbered 15904, was traveling from Chandigarh to Dibrugarh in Assam.
Of the 12 coaches that derailed, four were part of the AC compartment and came off the tracks a few kilometres before reaching Jhulahi railway station. The derailment has disrupted several trains on this route, with some being diverted, according to officials.
“I had a close shave, glad to be safe. Don’t worry, I am fine,” said a passenger from the derailed train. Videos from the scene showed people retrieving their belongings from the overturned coaches, with one coach flipped onto its side and passengers standing atop it.
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has been briefed about the accident, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
“Taking cognisance of the train accident in Gonda district, the district administration officials have been directed to reach the spot and expedite the relief work,” stated the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office.
The Chief Minister has instructed officials to promptly transport the injured to hospitals and ensure they receive appropriate treatment, wishing them a speedy recovery.
