On the 189th death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, the Meghalaya Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified its campaign for national recognition of the revered freedom fighter. At a commemoration ceremony held at the BJP headquarters in Shillong, party leaders urged the central government to honor Syiem’s legacy by unveiling his portrait in Parliament.
State Vice President Khrawboklang Basaiawmoit, National Council member David Kharsati, and State Chief Spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang reiterated their demand, emphasising Syiem’s significant contribution to India’s freedom struggle.
The BJP also renewed its appeal to the Postal department for a commemorative stamp in Syiem’s honour and urged the Education Ministry to include his story in history textbooks. These efforts are aimed at educating and inspiring future generations across Meghalaya and the nation about U Tirot Sing Syiem’s pivotal role in Indian history.
Throughout the day, the Meghalaya BJP organised various activities across the State. The State Mahila Morcha, led by President Susuki Pariat, and the BJYM team, led by youth President Mebaker Lyngdoh, paid respects at U Tirot Sing Syiem’s statue at the State Central Library. A city-wide cleaning drive followed, aimed at raising awareness about Syiem among the public.
Similar commemorative programs were held in Nongkhlaw and other districts of Meghalaya, highlighting the widespread recognition and reverence for U Tirot Sing Syiem’s contributions to the state’s history and the national freedom movement.
