Sikkim has set a new benchmark in the transportation sector by launching a comprehensive digital booking system. Through partnerships with major apps such as PayTM, RedBus, MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, PhonePe, GPay, Yatra, and IRCTC, the Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) now offers online bus reservations for key routes, including Siliguri, Gangtok, Ravangla, Pelling, Jorethang, and Namchi.
This innovative system features:
Cashless Transactions: Utilising PayTM and other leading payment apps for seamless transactions.
Online Bus Booking: Enabled via platforms like RedBus for easy reservations.
EDC e-Ticketing: Allows passengers to pay fares online and receive electronic tickets.
IRCTC Holiday Packages: The booking office in Gangtok now provides a full range of travel solutions, including both domestic and international packages.
According to Transport Department officials and Advisor Madan Cintury, this digital upgrade aims to improve the travel experience for residents and tourists, making transportation in Sikkim more accessible and efficient.
In addition, the Transport Department has introduced a QR code system for taxis to support UPI payments via GPay, PayTM, and other apps. To tackle the persistent issue of overcharging, which has negatively affected tourism, Sikkim has launched the “Sikkim Cab” service.
This initiative, developed in collaboration with Taxi Associations and Tour & Travel agents, introduces a fair pricing model and implements an app-based taxi booking system. This move is expected to address overcharging concerns and boost Sikkim’s tourism sector.
