Winning the prestigious award for his case study on flood management, Tripura Health Secretary and IAS officer Kiran Gitte proved his exceptional expertise in addressing critical water-logging issues. His recognition at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration or LBSNAA training camp in Mussoorie highlights the remarkable progress Tripura has achieved in flood control.
The training camp, held from June 18 to July 13, featured 83 IAS officers from 23 States. Gitte’s award-winning case study, focused on the Agartala Flood Mitigation Project, highlighted his significant contributions as Secretary of the Urban Development Department and Chairman of the Agartala Smart City Project during 2019-20.
A source from the Tripura Government remarked, “Each IAS officer was required to submit a case study. Kiran Gitte’s work on flood and drainage management in Agartala stood out for its depth and practical application, demonstrating his hands-on experience.”
The Agartala Flood Mitigation Project has introduced several innovative solutions, including sewerage and diesel-powered pumps, underground pipelines, and mechanical drain cleaning. Additionally, new drains and Swiss gates have been constructed, and a comprehensive monitoring system is now in place. These advancements have drastically cut water accumulation time from 2-3 days to under an hour during heavy rainfall of up to 150 mm.
