Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a statement suggested that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s involvement in a population control campaign could significantly impact Assam’s population growth. He proposed that if Gandhi were to become the face of such a drive, the State might witness an immediate decline in population growth rates.
CM Himanta commented, “The responsibility to tackle the population issue in Assam falls on the Congress, given the influence its leaders have. If Rahul Gandhi were to lead a population control campaign, the growth rate could drastically drop starting tomorrow.”
He explained that Gandhi’s influence extends particularly to certain communities in Assam, including Muslim villages. “Gandhi’s words carry weight in these areas. If you ask people in a Muslim village to choose between listening to Himanta Biswa Sarma or Rahul Gandhi, they will choose Gandhi.”
Himanta Sarma emphasised Gandhi’s potential role in addressing the State’s population challenges. “If anyone can make a significant impact on population control, it is Rahul Gandhi. His involvement could be crucial in effectively managing this issue,” he concluded.
