The Bairabi-Sairang railway line, a key infrastructure project aimed at connecting Mizoram to Bharat’s national railway network, is projected to be completed by July 2025, according to officials.
Currently, about 93 per cent of the 51.38-kilometre line has been finished. Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials shared this update with Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati during a recent review meeting. The railway line features four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang. Officials indicated that the section up to Hortoki will be operational in the coming days. A successful trial run has already been conducted on the Bairabi-Hortoki segment.
In the coming months, services are expected to extend to Mualkhang, with the full line reaching Sairang, near the state capital Aizawl, by next July.
The new railway line is anticipated to significantly boost Mizoram’s economy and enhance the State’s tourism sector. Governor Kambhampati noted that the completed project will reduce travel time from Assam to Mizoram and lower transportation costs.
Sanctioned in 2008-09, the project has a revised cost estimate of Rs 8,213.72 crore. Construction, which began in 2015, includes 55 major and 87 minor bridges, as well as 32 tunnels, highlighting the project’s complexity and scale.
