In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming Budget Session, Odisha Opposition leader Naveen Patnaik has established a shadow cabinet to challenge the ruling BJP and Chief Minister Mohan Majhi. This 50-member cabinet, inspired by the UK’s model, includes former ministers from Patnaik’s previous government.
The shadow cabinet is tasked with monitoring each minister and their department, preparing alternative policies, and ensuring that the ruling government is held accountable. Patnaik, reflecting on his extensive experience in the UK before entering politics, emphasises that the Opposition has a critical role in safeguarding public interests.
“The Opposition party is the custodian of people’s interests. We will scrutinise the activities of various departments and actively participate in State Assembly discussions to protect the interests of the public,” Patnaik stated in a recent BJD announcement.
This initiative highlights Patnaik’s determination to remain influential despite the BJD’s recent electoral defeat after 24 years in power. The BJP’s victory, with 78 of 147 Assembly seats, ousted Patnaik’s Government, which won 51 seats.
Patnaik’s election as Leader of the Opposition marks a significant shift for the BJD, which had previously aligned with the BJP in the Rajya Sabha. The BJD has indicated that it will not only voice concerns but also engage in protests if the BJP-led government at the Centre overlooks Odisha’s interests. The party has already aligned with the Opposition on the NEET issue and has taken active stances, including parliamentary walkouts.
