To enhance financial inclusion in the Northeastern States, the Indian Government led by PM Narendra Modi announced plans to establish 100 new branches of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) across the region. This initiative was revealed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Union Budget presentation for 2024-25.
This expansion is part of a larger effort to improve banking access in underserved areas. IPPB, which currently serves millions of account holders and operates through numerous branches nationwide, aims to reinforce its presence in the Northeast with these new facilities.
Sitharaman highlighted the government’s dedication to strengthening financial infrastructure as a vital step toward ensuring equitable development across all regions. The new branches will offer a variety of banking services, integrating the remote and economically diverse areas of the Northeast into the formal financial system.
