In a move to address persistent flood issues, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the Central Government will deliver substantial aid for flood management initiatives in Assam as part of the Union Budget for 2024-25.
Sitharaman detailed that Assam, along with Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Sikkim, will receive focused assistance to counter the impacts of recent natural disasters. The government has allocated Rs 11,500 crore to strengthen flood mitigation efforts in Bihar, reflecting its commitment to addressing flood crises throughout the country.
Assam is presently facing severe flooding, impacting 1,30,888 individuals across 23 revenue circles and 423 villages in 10 districts. This year’s floods, aggravated by landslides, lightning, and storms, have resulted in 113 fatalities. The Brahmaputra River is reported to be above the danger mark in Dhubri, while the Disang River is similarly elevated in Nanglamuraghat.
