The number of dengue cases in Manipur has seen a remarkable decline this year compared to the previous year. Only 81 dengue cases have been confirmed in 2023, a significant decrease from the 2,548 cases reported last year, as per the State Health department.
Health Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan highlighted the importance of collective efforts in combating dengue during a media briefing held at the Directorate of Health Services on July 23. He detailed the current statistics, noting that among the 81 cases, 29 were from Imphal West, 20 from Imphal East, 13 from Thoubal, nine from Bishnupur, five from Kakching, three from Chandel, and one from Kangpokpi district.
The drastic reduction in cases can be attributed to the comprehensive measures taken by the health department. However, Dr. Ranjan emphasized the critical role of public participation in these efforts. He cautioned against complacency, pointing out that dengue cases, once mostly reported during the monsoon season, are now being detected throughout the year due to urbanisation and population growth.
To manage and control the outbreak, the Health department, led by the State Malaria Officer, has implemented various strategies. These include collaboration with other departments, active engagement of ASHA workers in source reduction programs, and efforts to eliminate stagnant rainwater that could serve as mosquito breeding spots.
Dr Ranjan also mentioned that discussions with the social welfare director have been initiated to involve Anganwadi workers and helpers in monitoring domestic breeding sites. He urged the public to cover water tanks and highlighted ongoing activities such as fogging, awareness campaigns, treatment of mosquito nets, and sensitization programs through All India Radio.
The media briefing was attended by Health Services Director Dr O Sanahanbi, State Mission Director Dr M Dinesh, and officials from the Health Department, NHM Manipur, and the Malaria Department, reflecting a coordinated effort to maintain and further improve the State’s health outcomes.
