Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to shooting legend Abhinav Bindra for being awarded the prestigious Olympic Order, on Wednesday. PM Modi expressed his pride and admiration for the 2008 Beijing Gold medallist through his social media platform.
“It is a matter of great pride for every Indian that Abhinav Bindra has been honoured with the Olympic Order. Congratulations to him. Whether as an athlete or a mentor to emerging sports talents, his contributions to sports and the Olympic Movement are truly commendable,” PM Modi shared on X.
The award was conferred on Bindra on Tuesday. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) President conveyed the honour, stating, “It is with great pleasure that I inform you that the IOC Executive Board has decided to award you the Olympic Order for your outstanding services to the Olympic Movement.”
The Olympic Order is the highest distinction given by the IOC. The award ceremony will be held in Paris on August 10 during the 142nd IOC Session.
About the Olympic Order Award
Established in May 1975, the Olympic Order is the premier accolade of the Olympic Movement, intended to recognize exceptional contributions. Originally, it had three grades—gold, silver, and bronze. However, in 1984, the distinction between silver and bronze was abolished, and the gold order became reserved for heads of state and exceptional circumstances.
Previously, the Olympic Order replaced the Olympic Diploma of Merit and is typically awarded to chief national organizers at the closing ceremonies of Olympic Games.
