In a fervent plea during the Parliament Monsoon Session’s ZERO HOUR, Mizoram’s Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena demanded an immediate end to the import of ginger and areca nuts.
Vanlalvena stated about the severe challenges faced by farmers in the Northeast, who are struggling to compete with the influx of these commodities from neighbouring countries. He emphasised the crucial role these crops play in the livelihoods of many in the region.
The MP called upon the Central Government to impose a ban on the large-scale import of ginger from China, asserting that such imports are harmful to local agriculture and employment. He highlighted the adverse effects of uncontrolled imports on the income of Northeast farmers.
Additionally, Vanlalvena raised concerns about potential smuggling operations, hinting that border smugglers and certain government officials might be involved in the illegal import of these products. He urged for rigorous actions to prevent such activities and safeguard the interests of local farmers.
