A sit-in protest, advocating for a Disturbance-Free Education Zone, commenced across schools and colleges in Manipur from Thursday. Organised by the Coordinating Committee on Disturbance Free Educational Zone Demand, the demonstrations witnessed active participation from both teachers and students in government and private educational institutions.
The protests were held at numerous educational establishments, including TG Higher Secondary School, Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Millennium Institute of Sciences, Herbert School, Heritage Convent, Wangoi Higher Secondary, Imphal College, Oriental College, and Manipur College, among others.
N Thoithoiba, a member of the committee, criticised the various disruptions impacting the educational sector, citing incessant monetary demands from multiple organisations. These disturbances place undue pressure on educators and negatively affect students. He also condemned the State Government’s failure to implement a fair teacher transfer policy, which he believes give way to nepotism, favoritism, and corruption within educational institutions.
Student Priyanka Kongkham from TG Higher Secondary School mentioned about the importance of students in shaping the future and urged authorities to ensure an educational environment free from disruptions.
She called for the enforcement of legislation to guarantee at least 220 instructional days per year, protection of education from disruptions due to untimely program implementations, and prevention of the politicisation and corruption of the educational sector.
The protesters’ demands highlight a broader call for systemic reforms aimed at preserving the integrity and quality of education in the region.
