To tackle Assam’s recurring and chronic flooding issues, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma stressed on the necessity for a long-term, sustainable approach during a statement on July 26. He pointed out those floods, primarily driven by water flow from outside the State, demand more than temporary financial assistance.
CM Himanta highlighted that Assam has received substantial financial aid for flood relief, amounting to Rs 4,600 crore over recent years. He assured that more support is expected soon.
“The flood situation in Assam is intricate and requires a comprehensive solution,” stated the CM adding, “Although we have been allocated significant funds, a permanent strategy is essential to mitigate the recurrent impacts of floods.”
In recent updates, there is a positive trend in the flood situation. As of Thursday, water levels in major rivers have subsided, and the number of affected individuals has reduced to 66,267 across nine districts. Thankfully, no human casualties have been reported. The improving conditions provide some relief as the State continues to manage the challenges posed by seasonal floods.
