A severe landslide triggered by heavy rains in Nagaland capital Kohima has caused extensive damage, affecting at least four houses and leaving 20 families homeless. The landslide struck the Pezielietsie Colony in Ward-3 North Block on Friday, with some adjacent homes also sustaining partial damage.
Newly-elected Kohima Municipal Council or KMC members, including Chairman Neikhozo Suokhrie and Deputy Chairman Khrielievie Chusi, promptly visited the site to assess the damage.
Suokhrie expressed deep concern, noting that the affected area is classified as a sinking zone. He announced plans for a pilot project to construct a retaining wall and drainage system, which will be developed in consultation with the State Government.
Councillor Ruokuovolie Rutsa mentioned that this is the first occurrence of such a significant landslide in the region since 2017. In the meantime, local residents are actively assisting the displaced families.
