In a bid to boost tourism and combat drug abuse, Arunachal Pradesh Sports Minister Advocate Kento Jini and 29th Basar Assembly constituency MLA Nyabi Jini Dirchi launched the fourth BRUTE Promo Run in Itanagar.
The 5km run attracted over 400 participants, including IPR Minister Nyato Dukam and MLAs from Doimukh, Tawang, and Nari Koyu. Organised by Gumin Rvgo Kwlaju (GRK) in partnership with Itanagar Capital Police, the event sought to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and highlight the tourism potential of the region.
Launched in November 2021, the Basar Running Ultra Trail Experience (BRUTE) will culminate in November 2024 at Basar Confluence. The event aims to draw attention to Basar’s unique charm and the broader untapped potential of Arunachal Pradesh, attracting runners, adventure seekers, historians, and cultural enthusiasts.
The 5km run saw enthusiastic participation from students, ITBP Jawans, and tourists, with Taba Jobang securing first place by completing the run in 16 minutes. Advocate Kento Jini highlighted the event’s mission to encourage holistic fitness and well-being while also promoting local tourism. He assured that efforts would be made to establish this run as an annual event and stressed the harmful impacts of drug use on youth.
What began as a tourist-oriented running event has evolved into a comprehensive campaign promoting the Likabali-Basar-Mechuka tourism circuit, raising drug abuse awareness, and advocating for a healthy lifestyle.
The marathon featured two categories: the elite 60km ultramarathon and the 30km mid-distance run.
IPR Minister Nyato Dukam highlighted the event’s contribution to economic growth, the development of a sporting culture, and physical fitness.
MLA Nyabi Jini Dirchi noted its appeal to athletes at both national and international levels, while MLA Nabam Vivek underlined the importance of showcasing the Likabali-Basar-Mechuka circuit and encouraging holistic fitness.
Kurung Kumey district SP Bomken Basar explained that GRK conceived the event to promote tourism and healthy living. Engineer Er Joram Lali and student leader Tania Agu commended the initiative for promoting physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle, with Agu particularly urging young people to avoid drugs and embrace healthier living habits.
