Union Communications and Development of North Eastern Region or DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed his profound emotional connection with the Northeast and highlighted his extensive memories of the region during a press conference in Guwahati on July 27.
Reflecting on his relationship with the Northeast, Scindia stated, “I hold many cherished memories of this region and share a deep emotional bond with it. This region is like family to me, and I am committed to advancing its interests.”
The Scindia family’s historical ties to the Northeast, notably Maharaja Jiwajirao M Scindia’s relief efforts during the 1950 Assam earthquake, have profoundly influenced Jyotiraditya Scindia’s dedication to the region’s development.
Under his stewardship, the region has witnessed significant advancements in air connectivity and other critical areas, setting the stage for remarkable growth and prosperity.
During the press conference, Scindia revealed a substantial allocation of Rs 11,000 crore dedicated to flood relief efforts in Assam and Sikkim. He highlighted the government’s prompt action in addressing the region’s urgent needs.
He pointed out the Ministry of DoNER’s budget increase from Rs 1,750 crore during the Congress era to Rs 6,000 crore under the NDA government, signifying a considerable boost in financial backing.
Scindia emphasised the Northeast’s crucial role as a growth engine for Bharat, criticising the previous Congress administration for neglecting the region while praising the NDA’s substantial developmental strides. Key achievements include nearly doubling the number of airports in the region from 9 to 17, with three new airports in Arunachal Pradesh.
Additionally, Scindia announced the establishment of 100 new post offices across the Northeast to enhance connectivity and services. He also highlighted the creation of South Asia’s largest cancer hospital network in Assam, including seven new hospitals, and the forthcoming first AIIMS in Guwahati.
On the technological front, Scindia unveiled plans for the first national data center in the Northeast, to be set up in Assam, and a Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor unit designed to transform the region’s technological landscape. The central government has also earmarked Rs 10,000 crore for railway development in the 2024-2025 period, with 70 kilometers of new tracks planned for Assam.
Scindia concluded the press meeting by reaffirming the Central Government’s steadfast commitment to the Northeast’s development, pledging continued support and investment to elevate the region as a key player in Bharat’s progress.
