Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma proudly announced that the State’s three power companies, previously operating at a loss, have now become some of the best-performing State-owned utilities in Bharat.
CM Himanta remarked, “Three years ago, our power utilities were heavily reliant on government funds. We even had to divert money reserved for medicines and education to support these companies, enabling them to purchase electricity and pay their employees’ salaries. Through our dedicated efforts over the past three years, these power companies have transformed into profitable entities. Today, our power companies, including APDCL and AEGCL, are recognised as among the best in the nation.”
In addition to this achievement, the CM announced the successful implementation of the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which has installed a total capacity of 1,073 kW across 311 households in Assam.
The initiative is set to expand, with significant backing from both the Interim Budget 2024 and Union Budget 2024. A substantial number of homes are expected to adopt the scheme, thanks to generous subsidies provided directly to citizens’ bank accounts and highly concessional bank loans. Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured that the financial burden on citizens would be minimized, with the scheme being managed through a National Online Portal.
To promote widespread adoption, urban local bodies and panchayats will be incentivized to encourage the installation of rooftop solar systems in their areas. PM Modi emphasised the multiple benefits of the initiative, including increased household income, reduced power bills, and the creation of new employment opportunities.
