The Indian Embassy in Beirut has advised Indian nationals residing in Lebanon to exercise caution and maintain communication with the embassy in response to escalating tensions in the region.
This advisory follows recent military actions and heightened risks due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
The Israeli military conducted airstrikes targeting Hezbollah’s weapons depots and infrastructure in the Bekaa Valley, eastern Lebanon. This action came in response to a rocket attack from Lebanon that hit a soccer field in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, resulting in the tragic death of 12 children and teenagers. The Israeli military has described this as the most deadly attack on civilians since October 7.
The embassy’s advisory underlines the need for Indian citizens to stay informed and connected. The embassy can be reached through email at cons.beirut@mea.gov.in or the emergency phone number +961 7686 0128.
Concerns have been raised about the potential for a broader regional conflict. Despite the escalation, Hezbollah has denied responsibility for the rocket attack. The White House National Security Council is engaged in discussions with Israeli and Lebanese officials to seek a diplomatic resolution and halt further violence along the border.
Israel and Hezbollah have a longstanding history of conflict, with the last major war between them occurring in 2006. Israel views Hezbollah as a significant threat due to its growing arsenal and its established presence in Syria. Hezbollah’s primary focus remains its opposition to Israel.
Amidst the turmoil, Beirut Airport has experienced significant disruptions. Flights have been canceled or delayed, with Middle East Airlines (MEA) citing insurance issues linked to the heightened security risks. Lufthansa has also suspended five routes to and from Beirut operated by Swiss International Air Lines, Eurowings, and Lufthansa, effective until July 30, as a precautionary measure.
