Nirmala Sinha, a 52-year-old weaver from Tripura, has been honoured with the National Handloom Award 2023 by the Central Textile Ministry. The announcement recognises her exceptional craftsmanship in creating traditional Manipuri attire, specifically the Inaphi, using natural dyes.
Residing in Barasurma village, Dhalai District, Sinha has overcome significant personal challenges to perfect her weaving skills. As a Divyang (person with disability), she has demonstrated remarkable resilience and dedication throughout her career.
Sinha is one of six women from Northeast Bharat to be awarded this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will present the prestigious award in Delhi on August 7.
Sharing her insights into craft, Nirmala explained, “Inaphi is a traditional Manipuri garment, a wrap-around cloth worn by women that serves as a cover for the upper body. It resembles a shawl or dupatta and is renowned for its vibrant colours and intricate patterns. I use natural dyes and traditional techniques to create each piece.”
Nirmala’s journey in weaving began in her childhood, inspired by watching her mother and grandmother work on Inaphi.
“Despite being Divyang, I weave independently. Receiving this recognition is a great honour for me. I live with my mother, four brothers, and three sisters, and I weave at home. Each Inaphi takes about 12 days to complete. We sell them locally and in neighbouring villages through a weaving service centre,” Sinha added.
She will travel to Delhi on August 5 to attend the award ceremony on August 7.
