Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen’s impressive victory over Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon in their men’s singles Group L match at the Paris Olympics has been officially nullified. This change follows Cordon’s withdrawal from the event due to a left elbow injury.
According to Olympics.com, the Guatemalan shuttler’s departure means his subsequent Group L matches, including those against Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie and Belgium’s Julien Carraggi, will not take place. Consequently, the result of Sen’s match against Cordon has been removed from the records as per the BWF General Competition Regulations for the group stage.
Sen, who had previously triumphed over Cordon with scores of 21-8 and 22-20, will now be ranked based on the outcomes of his remaining matches in Group L. His next fixture is against Julien Carraggi on July 29.
In their match, Sen started strong, securing the first game 21-8 in just 14 minutes. Although Cordon mounted a comeback in the second game and held four game points, Sen rallied to win six consecutive points, clinching the match in 42 minutes.
In other Olympic news, Bharat has secured its first medal at the Paris Olympics. Shooter Manu Bhaker won a bronze in the Women’s 10 Meter Air Pistol event on Sunday. Bhaker, at 22, became the first Indian woman to medal in shooting at the Olympics, scoring 221.7.
This achievement marked a significant comeback for Bhaker, who faced a malfunction at the Tokyo Olympics. She is also the first Indian woman to reach a shooting final in two decades since Suma Shirur in 2004.
South Korea’s Ye Jin won gold with an Olympic record of 243.2 points, while her compatriot Kim Yeji took silver with 241.3 points. On the opening day, Bhaker qualified for the final by finishing third in the qualification round. Rhythm Sangwan, however, did not advance to the final, ending in 15th place.
