In a ceremony held at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati, Lakshman Prasad Acharya was sworn in as the new Assam Governor. Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi administered the oath. The event was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, cabinet ministers, and various other dignitaries.
Acharya takes over from Gulab Chand Kataria, who has been appointed as the Governor of Punjab and administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. At 59, Acharya will also hold additional charge of Manipur. Previously, he served as the Governor of Sikkim before his new appointment.
Acharya brings a wealth of experience in politics and public service to his new role. He has been actively involved with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His political career includes serving as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, providing him with substantial experience for his role as Assam Governor.
President Droupadi Murmu appointed Acharya as Governor of Assam, along with additional charge of Manipur, as part of a broader reshuffle announced on July 28.
The reshuffle included new Governors for several States, such as Rajasthan, Telangana, Maharashtra, Punjab, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.
Acharya’s appointment comes at a critical time as Assam faces various socio-political challenges, and his leadership is expected to introduce new perspectives and initiatives for the State’s governance.
As the new Governor, Acharya will oversee the implementation of State policies, maintain law and order, and collaborate closely with the State Government to ensure the welfare and development of Assam’s residents. His additional charge of Manipur adds another layer of responsibility, requiring a balanced and effective approach to governance in both regions.
