The Delhi Government is set to introduce a new law to regulate coaching centres in the capital following a tragic incident in which three UPSC aspirants lost their lives due to flooding, announced AAP minister Atishi.
“The Delhi Government will form a committee with officials and students to create regulations for coaching centres,” Atishi stated.
She revealed that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken action against coaching centres operating in basements, which are in violation of existing laws.
“Basements of 30 coaching centres in Rajinder Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, and Preet Vihar have been sealed, and notices have been issued to 200 other coaching centres,” Atishi said.
She added, “Strict action will be taken if any officials are found culpable in this incident. The misuse of illegal buildings led to the tragedy in Old Rajinder Nagar.”
The deaths of three UPSC aspirants occurred when they were trapped in the basement of a prominent coaching centre in Delhi last week, sparking widespread protests. The victims have been identified as Tania Soni and Shreya Yadav, both 25, and Navin Delvin, 28. Tania was from Telangana, Shreya from Uttar Pradesh, and Navin from Kerala.
Officials reported that an exploding drain caused flooding in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar.
In response to the incident, hundreds of students and locals have been protesting, demanding accountability from both the coaching centre and the authorities for the negligence that led to the deaths.
