Former Union Health Secretary Preeti Sudan will replace Manoj Soni as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Chairperson after Soni resigned earlier this month due to “personal reasons.” Sudan, who is currently a UPSC member, will assume her new role on August 1.
About Preeti Sudan
Preeti Sudan is an IAS officer from the 1983 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, bringing nearly 37 years of experience across various government sectors. She holds degrees in Economics and Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics and has received training in public finance management in Washington, DC.
Sudan previously served as the Union Health Secretary until July 2020, where she was instrumental in strategising responses during the Covid pandemic. Her career includes roles as Secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution, and positions in the Ministries of Women and Child Development, Defence, and others.
Her experience extends to consulting with the World Bank and leadership roles in global health initiatives, such as Chair of COP-8 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and Vice Chair of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. She has also been involved with the WHO’s Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response.
Sudan has made significant contributions to national programs, including Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Ayushman Bharat, the ban on E-cigarettes, and the legislation of the National Medical Commission.
