The Assam Government has announced plans to rename Rupsi Airport as Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma Airport starting July 31.
This initiative is a tribute to Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma’s substantial impact on the Bodo community.
The State cabinet has endorsed this proposal, which will be submitted to the Assam Legislative Assembly for approval before being sent to the Central Government.
Rupsi Airport, situated in lower Assam, dates back to World War II and is managed by the Airports Authority of India. Covering 337 acres, the airport features a terminal building of 3,500 square meters with a capacity to handle up to 250 passengers at peak times. The airport has a single runway and two parking bays designed for ATR-72-type aircraft.
The airport serves passengers from the districts of Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, and Bongaigaon in Assam, as well as Cooch Behar and Aliduarpur in West Bengal, including parts of Bhutan.
Travelers use Rupsi Airport to visit various historical and religious sites such as Gauripur Rajbari, Gurudwara Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahi in Dhubri, Ramona National Park, and Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary.
The renaming of the airport aims to enhance connectivity, boosting tourism and trade in the region.
