Amid surge in terror attacks in Jammu since 2021, two battalions of the Assam Rifles from Manipur’s Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts will move to the northern region of Bharat. In its place the Central Reserve Police Force or CRPF will handle the security issues in the Northeastern State, stated a government official.
The Assam Rifles, known for their role in securing the Myanmar border, were recently stationed in Jammu and Kashmir after two decades away. Their replacement by the CRPF has met with resistance from tribal groups, notably the Kuki Students’ Organisation, who commend the Assam Rifles for their positive influence in the hill regions.
Tensions in Manipur, which have escalated since ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023, have been exacerbated by criticism of the Assam Rifles. The Meitei community has accused the Assam Rifles of inaction in critical areas, alleging negligence while civilians face attacks. Earlier this year, 34 MLAs passed a resolution urging the forces to adopt a more active role.
Kuki-Zo groups have expressed their discontent with the CRPF’s deployment, urging the government to reconsider its decision. Despite this, a senior official confirmed that only two battalions are being replaced, and the existing infrastructure will be maintained for the incoming units.
Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla emphasised that the CRPF’s role in maintaining law and order in Manipur is being expanded. The ongoing violence has claimed at least 226 lives and displaced over 60,000 people, with around 36,000 personnel from the Indian Army and Central Armed Police Forces currently deployed in the State.
