The Supreme Court addressed the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 exam today, stressing that while there was no systemic breach of the exam’s integrity, the National Testing Agency or NTA must avoid its previous inconsistencies. The Court’s verdict came amidst significant controversy over allegations of paper leaks and irregularities in the exam process.
A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud highlighted that despite the issues raised, the NEET-UG 2024 exam would not be cancelled. The Court highlighted the need for the NTA to rectify the identified deficiencies in its examination system.
“We cannot afford this for the betterment of the students,” the Court stated, stressing that necessary improvements must be implemented by the Centre within the current year to prevent recurrence of such issues.
The Supreme Court clarified that although there were localized leaks in Patna and Hazaribagh, there was no evidence of a widespread systemic breach. The judgment also called for the establishment of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to incorporate technological advancements aimed at identifying and addressing potential cybersecurity weaknesses, enhancing identity verification processes, and ensuring rigorous CCTV monitoring of exam centers.
In addition, the Court expanded the mandate of the committee led by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan, tasked with reviewing the NTA’s functioning and suggesting reforms. The committee is expected to submit its report by September 30, focusing on various measures to address the identified shortcomings.
The interim verdict provided relief to the NDA government and the NTA, which had faced mounting criticism and protests over alleged large-scale malpractices, including question paper leaks, fraud, and impersonation during the exam held on May 5. Over 23 lakh students participated in the NEET-UG 2024, competing for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses.
