Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the role of governors as essential links between the Centre and the States, encouraging them to engage with people and social organisations to support underprivileged communities.
In his address at the Conference of Governors held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Friday, inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu, PM Modi stressed the importance of the governor’s role in advancing state welfare within constitutional limits, especially in tribal regions.
The conference, led by President Murmu, is set to address various topics, including improving Centre-state relations and enhancing welfare schemes. Breakaway sessions will focus on new criminal laws, higher education, and tribal area development.
President Murmu described the agenda as meticulously designed to tackle critical issues necessary for national progress. She highlighted that the implementation of three new laws marks the beginning of a new era in the justice system, replacing colonial-era legislation.
Murmu emphasized the need for better coordination among central agencies across states for effective democracy. She urged governors to enhance this coordination and contribute to the reform process, especially in higher education as chancellors of state universities.
The President called for a focus on inclusive development, especially for tribal areas, and encouraged the promotion of youth-led initiatives through campaigns like ‘MY Bharat’ and ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.’
Tensions between governors and Opposition-ruled States, such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, accentuated the significance of this conference. President Murmu expressed confidence in governors’ commitment to their constitutional duties and public service.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, a former governor, reminded the attendees of their oath and urged them to inform the public about social welfare schemes and recent developments. Union Home Minister Amit Shah encouraged governors to visit vibrant villages and aspirational districts to boost confidence and developmental progress.
