The Tripura Government has decided to move the land customs station (LCS) from Manughat to Murticherra in Unakoti district due to objections raised by the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) regarding the expansion of the current facility.
A 100-acre site was acquired at Manughat for the construction of a warehouse, parking area, and other facilities, with the foundation stone laid by former state industries minister Tapan Chakraborty. However, progress stalled after the BGB objected, citing the Indira-Mujib Pact, which prohibits construction within 150 yards of the international border.
An administrative team led by Deputy Director of the Industries and Commerce Department, Swapan Mitra, recently visited Murticherra, located about 10 km from the current LCS site, to assess its suitability for the relocation.
Mitra explained on August 1, “We explored a new location for the LCS at Murticherra because infrastructure development at the Manughat site has been blocked for years due to BGB objections. We are considering relocating the LCS to this alternative site.”
At Murticherra, approximately 12 acres of land are available for the new LCS. Mitra indicated that a proposal for the relocation will be submitted to the Bangladesh government through the Centre. If approved by Dhaka, the LCS will be moved to Murticherra.
