Assam has made remarkable progress in addressing sexual offences through its Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), with a total of 5,893 cases resolved by May 2024. This includes 17 specialized POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Courts dedicated to handling these sensitive cases.
The Fast Track Special Courts scheme, introduced under the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 2018, aims to speed up the judicial process for rape and POCSO cases. The scheme has been extended until March 2026 with a substantial funding of Rs. 1,952.23 crore. Its goal is to ensure timely justice for survivors of sexual crimes by clearing the backlog of cases more efficiently.
These specialized courts are part of the government’s broader commitment to enhancing women’s safety and combating sexual violence. By employing specialized judges and support staff, the FTSCs offer a focused and supportive environment for handling sensitive cases. The success of these courts in Assam reflects their vital role in delivering justice and alleviating the trauma faced by victims.
Additionally, the initiative has led to the creation of Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centres within the courts, which aim to make the legal process more compassionate and accessible for survivors. This approach underscores the commitment to providing a robust and empathetic legal framework for addressing sexual offences.
