Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi to convey his appreciation for the Central Government’s financial assistance of Rs 10 crore, designated for displaced individuals in the Northeastern State.
The aid comes in response to the significant influx of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Mizoram. Since Myanmar’s military takeover in February 2021, over 35,120 refugees from Myanmar have sought refuge in Mizoram.
Additionally, more than 2,000 Bangladeshi indigenous people have been residing in the State since November 2022. Currently, Mizoram is hosting 4,215 IDPs from Manipur, who fled ethnic violence in their home state that erupted in May last year. At the height of the unrest, over 12,000 IDPs from Manipur were sheltered in Mizoram, though many have since returned home.
During the meeting, Lalduhoma requested that Home Minister Shah facilitate a meeting between Home Affairs Ministry officials and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), which represents various tribal communities in Manipur.
Additionally, Lalduhoma informed Shah of an invitation extended by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to visit Imphal and expressed his willingness to accept it. The Mizoram CM also noted discussions held on the sidelines of the NITI Aayog meeting in New Delhi, where issues concerning the northeast region were discussed with Manipur CM Biren Singh and Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio.
An official from the Manipur Chief Minister’s Office indicated that the Special Central Team for Cyclone Remal has submitted their reports, with assistance anticipated soon.
