With a focus on transforming transportation infrastructure in Assam, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the development of the Guwahati Ring Road project. Stretching 121 kilometers, this ambitious project is set to cost Rs 5,729 crore and will be implemented under the Build-Operate-Toll (BOT) model.
The project will encompass three main components: constructing a 56-kilometre 4-lane Access-Controlled Northern Guwahati Bypass, expanding an existing 4-lane bypass on NH 27 to 6 lanes over 8 kilometres, and enhancing the remaining 58 kilometres of the NH 27 bypass. A notable feature of this development is the major bridge over the Brahmaputra River, which will significantly boost regional connectivity.
Upon completion, the Guwahati Ring Road is expected to streamline long-distance traffic on National Highway 27, which is a vital part of the East-West Corridor. This enhancement is expected to reduce congestion on major highways surrounding Guwahati and improve access to key cities and towns including Siliguri, Silchar, Shillong, Jorhat, Tezpur, Jogigopha, and Barpeta.
