Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump confirmed his agreement to debate Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris on September 4. The announcement was made via Trump’s Truth Social platform. However, it remains unclear if Harris has officially consented to the debate.
The timing of Trump’s announcement follows Harris’s recent securing of the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination for the upcoming November election. This development comes after President Joe Biden, 81, withdrew his candidacy on July 21. Biden’s decision was influenced by mounting concerns over his age and poor polling, compounded by a challenging debate performance against Trump in June on CNN.
With Biden’s withdrawal, Harris has become the Democratic candidate. Although a second debate between Trump and Biden was scheduled for September 10 on ABC, it is expected to proceed with Harris as the Democratic nominee. Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, had previously criticized the scheduling of debates before Harris’s official nomination.
In his announcement, Trump detailed that the debate will be held before a full audience, with specifics about the venue and moderators yet to be disclosed.
