Tensions in the Middle East have surged following a series of retaliatory actions between Iran and Israel, with significant repercussions for regional stability. The recent killing of high-profile Hamas and Hezbollah leaders by Israel has further escalated the conflict.
Israel targeted and killed Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, citing it as retaliation for deadly rocket attacks on the Golan Heights, on Tuesday. Hours later, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran, with the subsequent death of Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in Lebanon last month.
These incidents are part of a broader escalation that has intensified during the ongoing Gaza conflict, involving Iran-backed groups across Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen.
In response to the heightened danger, Indian authorities have issued a travel advisory for their nationals in the region. Indian citizens in Israel are advised to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols. Additionally, the Indian Embassy in Beirut has strongly recommended against traveling to Lebanon and has urged those already there to leave.
Air India has suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv until August 8 due to the escalating tensions.
US President Joe Biden expressed concern over the rising tensions, noting that the killing of Haniyeh has exacerbated the situation. Sources indicate that Iranian officials recently met with representatives of the “axis of resistance,” a coalition of Iran-backed groups, to strategize their response. They discussed potential coordinated or staggered retaliation against Israel.
In a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel is prepared for all scenarios, emphasizing a strong defensive and offensive stance.
