Tata Electronics has launched the construction of its ₹27,000-crore semiconductor assembly plant in Assam, with operations slated to commence in 2025. This new facility is set to generate 27,000 jobs, including 15,000 direct positions and 12,000 indirect roles.
The foundation stone ceremony for the plant was held at Jagiroad in Morigaon district, attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran. Chandrasekaran announced that the plant would produce 4.83 crore chips daily using domestically developed technologies.
He highlighted the rapid pace of construction, expressing hope that the plant will be operational by 2025. “Currently, we have hired 1,000 locals, and as the facility grows, it will create an entire semiconductor ecosystem,” noted Chandrasekaran.
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the project on February 29, 2024. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the plant’s construction began just five months post-approval.
Vaishnaw revealed the plant would produce 4.83 crore chips per day, utilising three major technologies developed in Bharat. These chips are anticipated to be integral to vehicles, including electric vehicles, and various large-scale communications and networking equipment.
Besides, he accentuated the semiconductor industry’s role as a foundational sector, noting that its establishment will spur numerous downstream and upstream job opportunities. As part of the India Semiconductor Mission, efforts are underway to develop 85,000 skilled professionals, with nine Northeastern institutes contributing to this talent pool.
CM Himanta described the ceremony as a “golden day” for Assam and assured Tata Electronics of full support in setting up the facility. He acknowledged the efforts of PM Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Minister Vaishnaw in making the project a reality.
The CM reflected on past challenges, noting that despite reduced insurgency, private investment in Assam had been limited. He recalled his previous successful engagement with Chandrasekaran regarding the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Guwahati.
In addition to the Assam plant, Tata Electronics is also establishing Bharat’s first wafer fabrication unit in Dholera, Gujarat, with an investment of ₹91,000 crore and a production capacity of 50,000 wafers per month.
