Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma has called on the Central Government to devise a ‘Plan B’ in light of the escalating unrest in Bangladesh. He highlighted the potential repercussions of the crisis on the bordering Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and West Bengal, asserting that these regions could be significantly affected.
Pradyot asserted that the situation in Bangladesh is “quite grave,” urging the Indian Government to prepare for any eventuality. His call for action comes as the Centre has issued a travel advisory, advising nationals to avoid traveling to Bangladesh until further notice.
In a statement on X, Pradyot expressed concerns about rising anti-Bharat sentiment in Bangladesh, drawing parallels to similar sentiments seen in the Maldives. He wrote, “Tripura, West Bengal, Meghalaya, Assam will be on the frontline of any developments there. The Government of India must have a contingency plan in place for the present and future.”
Pradyot also stressed the importance of empowering and preparing indigenous communities within Bharat as a defensive measure. He stated, “Reports indicate a severe situation in Bangladesh. The Indian Government should prepare and empower indigenous people within Bharat.”
He voiced concerns about future internal security, noting, “We respect and admire Sheikh Hasina, but life after her may pose challenges for internal security.”
The ongoing violence in Bangladesh has resulted in at least 98 deaths, including 14 police officers, and hundreds more have been injured.
The External Affairs Ministry has strongly advised Indian nationals against traveling to Bangladesh and urged those currently in the country to exercise extreme caution, limit their movements, and stay in touch with the High Commission of India in Dhaka through their emergency contact numbers: 8801958383679, 8801958383680, and 8801937400591.
