Following severe flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall, all educational institutions within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) area are closed today, August 6. This closure affects both government and private schools and is mandated by the district commissioner’s office under Section 30.2 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, to ensure public safety.
The district commissioner issued an official statement noting, “In light of the flash floods caused by intense rains in Guwahati city on 05/08/2024, all educational institutions (both government and private) are hereby closed on 06/08/2024 within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area.”
The torrential rains have severely impacted daily life in Guwahati, with streets and low-lying areas submerged and significant traffic congestion in key city junctions due to artificial flooding.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecasted a generally cloudy sky with intermittent rain and thunderstorms for Guwahati, indicating that the weather conditions may continue to disrupt daily activities.
