Bharat has extended its support to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled Dhaka and landed in Ghaziabad amid escalating unrest. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed an all-party meeting on Tuesday, explaining that Sheikh Hasina is in a state of shock and needs time to recover before discussing her future plans with the Indian Government.
During the meeting held at Parliament House, S Jaishankar assured political leaders, including Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, that New Delhi has communicated with Bangladesh’s Army chief to ensure the safety of over 10,000 Indian students in the country.
Addressing concerns about the involvement of foreign powers in the Bangladesh unrest, S Jaishankar did not dismiss the possibility and asserted that the Indian Government is closely monitoring the situation.
In a post on X, S Jaishankar expressed gratitude for the unanimous support and understanding from all political parties. “Briefed an All-Party meeting in Parliament today about the ongoing developments in Bangladesh. Appreciate the unanimous support and understanding that was extended,” he wrote.
Congress leader Karti Chidambaram reaffirmed the party’s commitment to national security and interests, stating full support for the government’s actions.
Key political figures, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister J P Nadda, JD(U) leader and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh ‘Lalan’, JD(S) leader and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Lok Sabha’s Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, DMK leader TR Baalu, SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav, Trinamool leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay, and NCP leader Supriya Sule took part in the meeting.
Sheikh Hasina arrived at Ghaziabad’s Hindon airport on Monday, escaping violent protests in Dhaka over government job quotas. The unrest has resulted in over 300 deaths in recent weeks. Her departure to Bharat marks a significant turn in the crisis, with plans for her to seek political asylum in the United Kingdom. The military aircraft that brought her to Bharat has since returned to Bangladesh without her.
