External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed the Rajya Sabha that Bharat is maintaining regular contact with Bangladeshi authorities amidst the ongoing political turmoil following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and subsequent departure from the country.
In his address, Jaishankar stated, “In the last 24 hours, we have been in regular touch with the authorities in Dhaka. This is the current situation. I seek the understanding and support of the House regarding sensitive issues involving an important neighbour with whom we have always shared a strong national consensus.”
He highlighted the government’s vigilance concerning the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, mentioning, “There are reports of initiatives by various groups and organisations to ensure their protection and well-being. We welcome these efforts but remain deeply concerned until law and order is visibly restored. Our border guarding forces have also been instructed to remain exceptionally alert given the complexity of the situation.”
Detailing the events that led to Sheikh Hasina’s abrupt departure, Jaishankar explained, “On August 5, demonstrators gathered in Dhaka despite the curfew. Our understanding is that following a meeting with security leaders, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina decided to resign.”
Jaishankar further added, “At very short notice, she requested approval to come to Bharat. We simultaneously received a request for flight clearance from the Bangladesh authorities. She arrived in Delhi yesterday evening.”
