Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to remain in Bharat for an extended period as her plan to seek asylum in the UK faces complications, according to sources.
Sheikh Hasina, whose 15-year tenure ended abruptly following violent protests and riots related to a contentious quota system, arrived at Hindon airbase near Delhi on Monday. It was initially anticipated that she might seek asylum in the UK, where her sister, Sheikh Rehana, is a British citizen.
However, Hasina’s asylum bid may encounter obstacles due to UK immigration regulations. The UK’s asylum policy stipulates that individuals must seek asylum in the first safe country they enter and does not allow individuals to travel to the UK specifically to apply for asylum or temporary refuge.
As of today, Sheikh Hasina is residing in a secure location near Hindon airbase. Earlier, the Bangladesh Air Force C-130J aircraft that transported her to Bharat returned to Dhaka. The Indian authorities provided full support to the aircraft crew during their 16-hour stay at the airbase.
In a related development, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Sheikh Hasina’s son and former official adviser, expressed his belief that his mother has completed her work in Bangladesh. Joy remarked, “She has not done anything wrong; she provided the best government in the country. She will now spend time with her grandchildren.”
