In response to the destruction of a prominent statue of Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem in Dhaka, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has appealed to Bangladesh’s interim government to manage the resulting unrest.
Highlighting the critical nature of the situation, CM Sangma remarked, “While the events in Bangladesh are an internal matter, we urge the caretaker government to take action and prevent further loss of life and property.”
The vandalism of U Tirot Sing Syiem’s bust at the Indian Cultural Centre has escalated tensions between the neighbouring regions.
Protesters targeted the statue of the revered Khasi leader, who fought against British colonial rule. The incident quickly spread across social media platforms in Meghalaya, provoking widespread condemnation.
