To counter the potential unrest arising from an expected influx of illegal migrants from Bangladesh, Jiribam District Magistrate and IAS officer Krishna Kumar has instituted a strict curfew effective immediately. This measure, mandated under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita or BNSS, 2023, addresses growing concerns about public safety and the risk of riots.
The curfew encompasses the entire revenue jurisdiction of Jiribam District, banning gatherings of five or more individuals and the possession of weapons or sharp objects that could be used in violence. Exemptions are made for government officials, security forces, and essential service providers.
This action follows a report from the Superintendent of Police, which identified a credible threat of disturbances and violence due to activities of anti-social elements. Additionally, any processions, including those for weddings or funerals, must receive prior approval from either the District Magistrate or the Superintendent of Police.
To minimise disruption, the curfew will be relaxed from 9 am to 3 pm within Jiribam Municipal Council and Borobekra Sub-Division, allowing normal activities to continue during these hours.
The curfew is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice. It has been broadly communicated through notice boards, the district administration website, and local media to ensure widespread awareness.
Security forces have been assigned the responsibility of enforcing the curfew and maintaining law and order, as outlined in coordination directives sent to relevant government and security departments.
